Bebe May – “Maybe in the Morning”

Not everything makes sense while you are living through it. Sometimes, you need distance from a disappointment before you can understand what went wrong, what you missed, or whether things were ever going to turn out the way you imagined. On “Maybe in the Morning,” Manchester-based singer-songwriter Bebe May sits with that uncertainty, holding on to the possibility that tomorrow might bring a clearer view of today.

The song began with a different intention. May initially wanted to write something sunny, taking inspiration from The Velvet Underground’s “Who Loves the Sun.” Instead, the composition gradually moved somewhere more wistful. Rather than forcing it back toward the original idea, she followed where the songwriting led her, allowing a brighter starting point to develop into something more complicated.

That shift gives the song its appeal. “Maybe in the Morning” doesn’t treat disappointment as a dramatic turning point that demands an immediate answer. Its narrator seems caught between knowing that something may not work out and wanting to believe there is still a reason to hold on. There is comfort in that uncertainty, even when it risks becoming another way of postponing the truth.

The lyrics capture this through the promise of a different perspective. The repeated thought of seeing things more clearly in the morning suggests that time might change how the present feels. What seems unbearable now could look different after some rest and distance. But there is another possibility beneath that hope: perhaps the morning will reveal something the narrator has been reluctant to admit.

May’s understated indie pop gives the conflict room to breathe. Winding guitar lines and gentle keyboard melodies carry the song without pushing its emotions too far in either direction. As it approaches the end, a breezy guitar solo and swelling organ tones create a sense of release, as though the worries that have occupied the song might gradually loosen their grip.

That sound fits naturally with May’s wider approach to music. Working from home with collaborator Henry Smith, who records as Chateau, she draws on a mixture of ’60s pop, ’90s indie, and contemporary bedroom pop. Her recordings often embrace the character of tape experimentation and retro-toned instruments, giving the music a personal, lived-in quality rather than an overly polished finish.

Following her earlier single, “Sometimes When I’m Lonely,” this release reveals a more subdued side of May’s songwriting. Where that first track leaned toward scrappy, sunny guitar pop, “Maybe in the Morning” allows uncertainty to take centre stage.

May describes the song as being about life not turning out as expected, the hope that things will improve, and the value of seeing a situation differently. There is no promise that a new day will solve everything. Sometimes, the most you can do is give yourself permission not to have all the answers yet.

With “Maybe in the Morning,” Bebe May finds something quietly reassuring in that pause between disappointment and understanding. The future remains uncertain, but perhaps it will be easier to face once the light changes.
