Leavell – “Spotlight”

Being noticed is one thing. Being comfortable with everyone watching is another. On “Spotlight,” Kentucky-based singer, songwriter and rapper Leavell explores that difference through an unexpected move into indie pop, trading his usual hip-hop approach for a brighter, groove-driven sound with a more complicated idea at its centre.

The song grew out of a spontaneous studio moment. Leavell recalls going through beats when the right one came on and he instinctively began singing. Within 25 to 30 minutes, he and his collaborators realised they had something worth pursuing. That unplanned beginning seems fitting for a track that takes him outside his usual musical territory.

Warm, guitar-led melodies and an upbeat groove give “Spotlight” an easy, feel-good appeal. Yet the central idea is less straightforward than the sound might suggest. The song considers what happens when the attention that comes with popularity starts affecting the people around you, particularly those who enjoy its benefits but feel uncomfortable when they become part of the public gaze.

For Leavell, the subject comes from personal experience. He describes dating women who struggled with the attention he received at shows and public events. Some seemed happy to enjoy the advantages of his growing profile but became uneasy when they found themselves in the spotlight too. That contradiction became the starting point for a song about visibility, insecurity and the less attractive side of being known.

The opening line, “She don’t want the spotlight,” gave the track its title and became the idea everything else revolved around. The hook also introduces an interesting question: how much of our desire for recognition comes from wanting to be seen, and how much depends on controlling what other people see? In a culture where popularity can feel like a measure of success, being visible brings its own pressure to keep imperfections hidden.

Despite those themes, “Spotlight” does not approach the subject with a heavy hand. Its lively indie-pop direction creates an appealing contrast with the discomfort underneath the lyrics. That contrast is part of what makes the release interesting: a song can feel good to listen to while still questioning the attention many people spend their lives chasing.

The change in sound also opened new possibilities for Leavell. He describes the recording sessions as fun, saying the unfamiliar direction brought out a playful side of him in the studio. He has even expressed interest in exploring Southern Soul next, while pointing to upcoming Afrobeat collaborations as another part of his plans.

“Spotlight” is a reminder that stepping outside a familiar genre can reveal something new about an artist. Leavell has taken a personal observation and placed it inside a brighter, more accessible musical setting, allowing the song’s deeper question to travel without weighing down its groove. If this release is any indication, his next chapter may be less about staying in one lane and more about discovering how many different directions his music can take.
