For a lot of Canadians, “Run With Us” belongs to childhood. Swamp Music Players had the nerve to take that memory and darken it.

The Victoria, British Columbia collective’s new version of the beloved The Raccoons theme song trades bright nostalgia for shadowy synths, heavier guitars, and a mood that feels worlds away from the original. Yet somehow, it never loses sight of what made the song special in the first place.

Originally performed by Lisa Lougheed, “Run With Us” became famous as the closing theme for The Raccoons, one of Canada’s most recognizable animated series. For many people who grew up during the 1980s, the song is more than a television theme. It’s tied to a particular time and place, which makes reworking it a risky move.

Fortunately, Swamp Music Players aren’t interested in playing it safe. Since forming around 2015, the group has built a reputation for reshaping familiar songs through their own retro-futuristic lens. Drawing from swamp rock, swamp blues, cosmic Americana, and classic rock, they have developed a sound that feels both vintage and unexpected. Their previous reinterpretations of songs by Concrete Blonde, the Ramones, and Psycho Charger showed a willingness to take familiar material somewhere new. “Run With Us” continues that tradition.

From the opening moments, the band’s approach is clear. Dark synthesizers create an atmosphere that feels mysterious and cinematic, while strong guitar work pushes the song toward alternative rock territory. The result sits comfortably between 1980s synthpop and modern rock, allowing the song to feel nostalgic without becoming trapped in nostalgia.

One of the most interesting details behind the release is the way the vocals were recorded. Lead singer Hillary Beckett tracked her performance in the living room of an old heritage home using a vintage stage microphone and an 8 track recorder. Rather than chasing a polished studio sound, the band embraced the natural character of the room. That decision gives Beckett’s voice a warmth that perfectly suits the song’s darker mood.

Beckett has become one of the defining voices within the Swamp Music Players universe, having recorded nearly a dozen songs with the collective. She also performs with projects including Andison Hills, Tight Hair, and Cooped Up Lyons, bringing a versatility that is easy to hear throughout this recording.

The project later moved to Detroit’s Battle Chamber Music Studio, where Steve Greene helped shape the final production. Lead guitar duties were handled by the mysterious musician known only as The Swamp Wizard, who traveled to Detroit to record his parts while continuing to keep his identity hidden. That sense of mystery fits naturally within a band that has always enjoyed creating its own mythology.

According to producer, bassist, and keyboardist Evert Peter, the inspiration for the release came from childhood memories shared by many Canadians. At the same time, the goal was never to recreate those memories exactly. Instead, the band wanted to capture the excitement of the music itself and filter it through their own creative vision.

That’s what makes this version of “Run With Us” worth hearing. It respects the original without treating it like a museum piece. Swamp Music Players understand that the best tributes don’t simply repeat the past. Sometimes they challenge listeners to hear something familiar in a completely different way.
