Soft Top Intrepid – “Pause”

Time has a strange way of making ordinary moments feel important. On “Pause,” Ottawa duo Soft Top Intrepid turn that feeling into a dream-pop and indie-rock song about memory, waiting, and the need to appreciate life while it is happening.

Made up of Rob LaPlante and Chris Galambos, Soft Top Intrepid have built their sound around guitar-led synth pop and straightforward lyrical storytelling. “Pause,” the first single from their upcoming EP, continues that direction while giving the duo a particularly reflective subject to work with: our relationship with time and the memories we leave behind.

The song’s central feeling arrives early in the lyric, “All this time I’ve spent waiting.” There is something quietly heavy about that line. It suggests looking backward at the time already gone while also realizing how much of the present can disappear when we are too busy waiting for what comes next.

That idea is carried by the production. “Pause” settles into a rolling rhythm that resembles a pulse, a choice that connects naturally with the song’s themes of time and memory. Hazy guitars, synthesizers, bass, and drums create a spacious instrumental that feels both relaxed and gently restless. The music never needs to force the emotion; it lets the atmosphere do much of the work.

There is also an appealing cinematic quality to the song. Its dreamy textures and guitar hooks could easily sit inside a coming-of-age film or romantic comedy, particularly during one of those scenes where nothing dramatic is happening but the character suddenly realizes how much a particular moment means.

The band’s own process adds another layer to the track. Galambos described “Pause” as a song that seemed to find its identity almost immediately, while LaPlante noted that its earlier versions had a very different rhythmic approach. They eventually settled on the rolling pulse that became central to the finished track, giving the song a musical heartbeat that mirrors its subject.

That sense of movement keeps “Pause” from becoming simply nostalgic. The song looks at memories, but its message is ultimately about the present. There is a reminder here to stop waiting for life to begin somewhere further down the road and instead recognize the value of the moment already in front of you.

Soft Top Intrepid have been releasing atmospheric, guitar-centered music for several years, and “Pause” feels like a natural continuation of that world. It is dreamy without losing its shape, reflective without becoming overly sentimental, and spacious enough to let the listener bring their own memories into it.

For a song about time, “Pause” does something fitting: it gives you a reason to slow down and notice where you are.
